Major influences for ‘The Drums’
Joy division
This is the band that most critics and fans think that The Drums have based their sound on, similarities between the two bands are close, The Drums have altered and added their own unique sound to the old school waves and look of Joy Division. Some are calling The Drums this generations Joy Division.
The Smiths
The Smiths were an English rock band formed in Manchester in 1982. Based on the song writing partnership of Morrissey (vocals) and Johnny Marr (guitar), the band also included Andy Rourke (bass) and Mike Joyce (drums). Critics have called them the most important alternative rock band to emerge from the British Indipendent music scene in the 80's.
Orange Juice
Orange Juice was a Scottish post-punk band founded in the middle class Glasgow suburb of Bearsden as the Nu-Sonics in 1976. Edwyn Collins formed the Nu-Sonics (named after a cheap brand of guitar) with his school-mate Alan Duncan and was subsequently joined by James Kirk and Steven Daly, who left a band called The Machetes. The band became Orange Juice in 1979. They are best known for the hit "Rip It Up", which reached number 8 on the UK Singles Chart in February 1983, the band's only UK Top 40 hit.
When looking at these bands you can see the main characteristics that The Drums have taken from them, the 4 member structure for their band and also the clothing is very similar with those older bands to The Drums now. The sound is the biggest similarity though, when you listen to these bands and compare them to The Drums they are very similar in how they produce and present their music. Most of these bands including The Drums all fall under a similar boundary when it comes to genre, the more indie pop/rock sound.
